Effective Communication
9-11th Grade
For this I decided to use my experiences on the AMES Robotics team. If you don't know what a robotics team does allow me to explain. At the beginning of the year, the second Saturday in January, the creators of the competition, FIRST, announce what that years challenge will be. This year it was to pick up big yoga balls and pass them to other bots to gain assist points and to shoot the ball into a hole that is 10 ft in the air. We only have 6 weeks to build, code, and test our bot. Without effective communication we wouldn't be able to get a functional robot. For more information I will provide a link to the AMES Robotics website.

This is an essay I wrote for my writing class. The assignment was to show how a piece of media is connected to our everyday life. I wrote about a viking metal band called Amon Amarth and how they are telling the story of the vikings gods of Norse mythology.

Critical Thinking
9-11th Grade
Programming is, to me, the best description of Critical Thinking. I think this because you spend approximately 80% of the time just staring at and trying to figure out whats wrong with your code and the other 20% is actually writing code. Programming is the ability to create a solution out of a problem. It is a method of problem solving that takes a great amount of skill and thought. Here are some of my examples of code that I have written.

In this code I'm using an array and then organizing it in ascending order or descending order.

Integration and Application of Knowledge in Civic, Social and Personal Contexts

I am currently working on a mechanical chess board. This chess board has been coded to allow someone to use their android phone to move each piece around. The way that this works is basically an X-Y plotter with an electromagnet on a piston. Each chess piece has a steel rod going through it. This allows the electromagnet to pick up each game piece. This is just one example of how the things I have learned at AMES has been incorporated into every day life.

At my work I am required to help customers. I help them find parts for their cars, trucks, helis, quads, boats, and planes. I learned how to repair all of these because of what I have learned from AMES. I learned the mechanics of each vehicle and how to repair them. I learned how electricity works and what I need to know to repair electrical circuits. I learned about how batteries work and how to charge them properly.
